Our new web site... and what happens when you put 3000 geeks in one room

I'm pleased to announce the release of our new web site, which is built on the social publishing platform Drupal, from this year's DrupalCon Convention in San Francisco.

Since Myplanet was founded back in the year 2000 as a web design & development firm, our mission has evolved. Today our team of strategists, engineers and designers are focused on one thing: Using Technology to Build Better Organizations. (Read more

“Our old web site just did not reflect that mission. Now we've brought to bear many of the practices we implement for our clients, starting off with regular blog posts on topics near and dear to our hearts.”

If you're interested in improving your organization using technology, you're going to love what we have in store. Week by week we will build towards our vision of an online community featuring articles, training, white papers and the chance for you to connect with people sharing similar goals.

Now, as I promised in my title, you're probably wondering why 3,000 geeks would come together in one room... Drupal and DrupalCon

We've built our new web site on an open source software called Drupal. Drupal is a social publishing platform that powers more than 500,000 web sites globally. In the past ten years Drupal has also evolved into the leading open-source web content management system. As such, we've found ourselves placing a reasonable number of our clients on a Drupal platform.

DrupalCon is a semi-annual gathering of leading Drupal experts and contributors from around the world. This year over 3000 people came to San Francisco for the week. We had the opportunity to meet people from across Europe and North America who are using Drupal in some pretty innovative applications - co-ordinating relief efforts in Haiti, enabling Open Government for The White House, building collaborative intranets for the World Bank, even managing hundreds of brand micro sites for companies such as Mattel.

Why has Drupal done so well the last few years?

  • Enterprise Ready- The Drupal community has positioned itself for enterprise use, addressing key capabilities in scalability, security and workflow.
  • Flexible- Drupal has hundreds of pre-written modules such as Calendars, Data Feeds, Online Communities and even Microsoft Sharepoint integration. These modules save our clients a lot of custom development. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, we can invest in developing new and proprietary technologies.
  • Well Funded- Technology investors have gotten serious about Drupal, with several venture capital companies funding products built on the Drupal platform.
  • High Profile- Drupal has been seen in some very prominent projects, as I've mentioned above. This has meant increasing credibility in most enterprises, governments and not-for-profits.

We're excited to attend and participate in the next DrupalCon in Copenhagen this fall, including sharing some of the exciting projects we have underway. More to come on those soon...

Stay Classy San Diego,
Jason Cottrell
